This New Zealand couple are touring the state to see the best of Western Australia, and the Cape to Cape Track is top of the list.
Deb and Patrick Thorp are on a month-long holiday, exploring from Kalbarri in WA’s Gascoyne region south to Perth and Margaret River. Then it’s on to Albany on the south coast.
Half way through their big Aussie adventure, they’re spending seven days in the Margaret River region hiking the Cape to Cape Track. The opted for the Cape To Cape Explorer Tours‘ self guided option.
“It’s better than we thought. The rugged coast, all the flowers that are blooming, and the solitude of the Track – that’s what stands out in my kind,” said Patrick.
Impressive coastlines on the Cape to Cape Track
Home is the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, so the couple are used to impressive coastlines.
“But this is different. It’s really beautiful and raw. The waves are so powerful and you’ve got views over the ocean for most of the hike,” Deb said.
The couple said they loved watching surfers riding the powerful Indian Ocean swells.
“They’re brave. Some of the waves we’ve seen were pretty big,” Patrick said.
Orchids and ospreys on the Track to boot
Seeing ospreys in flight and spotting orchids on the Track also rated on their long list of highlights.
“We saw a pair of ospreys on a big nest at Cape Mentelle. And we had our eyes peeled all week for orchids. We’ve spotted plenty!,” Patricks said.
“Then you’ve got the wildflowers. There really is so much to see.”
