Canadian hiker George Xuereb was basking in the sunshine last week out on the Cape to Cape Track and relishing frequent swim stops in the irresistible blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
George and his Adelaide-based hiking companion Martin Davey completed the full length of the Cape to Cape Track in comfort on an eight day Cape to Cape Track Experience with Margaret River’s Cape to Cape Explorer Tours.
The walkers’ enthusiasm was contagious, with “fabulous” soon becoming the word of the week! The friends opted for a fully-supported, semi-guided package that included all accommodation, transport and “excellent food”, as well as two mornings of interpretive guiding with Cape to Cape Explorer Tours’ expert guides.
Explorer Tours’ Gene Hardy provided insights into the geological history and foundations of the Track and how these have shaped and weathered over thousands of years. Martin and George were intrigued with the cliffs, limestone formations, rocky bays and granite-gneiss outcrops.
The area’s striking geology has directed the evolution of an array of vegetation types along the Track. Cape to Cape Explorer Tours’ resident environmental scientist Drew McKenzie joined the tour on Day 4 to unravel the biodiversity secrets of the dune vegetation, coastal scrub and the karri forests – and the inhabitants of the area. Birds a-plenty were sighted, along with seals, dolphins and a large southern heath monitor.
George and Martin walked 20-25km each day for six days. They enjoyed the Western Australian sunsets, an early morning snorkel and an evening at local winery Cape Mentelle’s “Movies in the Vineyards”.
For Martin, it was an “excellent, invigorating and enriching experience”. George described it as “one of the best walks I’ve ever done”. They even talked about doing it all over again!
