It was a family affair on the Cape to Cape for this Perth dad who has hiked Margaret River’s iconic 132km hiking trail with each of his daughters. Perth surgeon Michael Musk loves the Cape to Cape Track so much he just keeps coming back, hiking the trail separately with each of his three daughters. And most recently with all together! How would you describe your latest Cape to Cape crossing?
It was stunning natural beauty. Challenging and soul-discovering. It enabled the perfect environment to promote constructive and relationship family bonding. It was physically challenging especially with the heat that week. The way your body respond in such a positive way progressively over five days is extremely satisfying.
How many times have you done the Cape to Cape Track?
This makes 3 and a half. The first time was in 2017 with my oldest daughter Nina, who was 10 years old at the time. Then I came back in 2019 with my next daughter Gemma when she was 11 years old. In 2021, I came with Megan when she was 11 years old, but we only completed half the track due to fire. And now we returned in 2024 to do it all together, so that Megan could complete the track. Now Nina is 18, Gemma is 16 and Megan is 14.
How did the four hikes compare and how have they affected your family bonds?
All four Cape to Cape hikes were different, but each was brilliant! Each time I loved the extraordinary views and beautiful wildlife. Each hike with individual daughters was different, while most recently doing it all together was very special. The hikes have certainly strengthened the relationship between me and my daughters. And doing it all togethered strengthened my daughters’ relationships with each other.
