Tackling the Cape to Cape trek was supposed to be a “warm-up” for Perth couple Harvey and Heather Collins. They’d booked flights to Slovenia where they planned too go hiking through the eastern European nation’s open plains and mountains.

Then COVID-19 travel restrictions struck. And their “warm up” hiking holiday on Margaret River’s stunning 124km Cape to Cape Track became the main event of the winter for the Perth couple, who are keen hiking enthusiasts. “But we certainly weren’t disappointed,” Harvey says. “The Cape to Cape trek is lovely.”

A family affair on the Cape to Cape trek
Their son Brendan joined the couple, making it a family affair. The Collins’ opted for Cape To Cape Explorer Tours’ self-guided 4 Day Highlights adventure. Winter rains no deterrent on the Cape to Cape trek
Despite battling some winter rains, the family said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They had two days filled with plenty of sunshine, before rain struck later in the trip.
“We had a fantastic time. Each day was really different, but all enjoyable. We’re already planning to come back and walk a couple more sections of the Cape to Cape Track, hopefully in October.We really appreciated the service from Cape To Cape Explorer Tours. The food was good and so was the accommodation,” says Harvey.

“For me personally, I loved Day 2 from Smiths Beach. That was pretty special. And I really enjoyed the walk on Day 3 from Ellensbrook to the beach at Kilcarnup. The weather was a bit wild but gee it was a nice walk.
“The plus side of hiking in winter is we hardly saw anyone on the Track. Each day it was two or three people at most. That was pretty special!”
