Participants on the Ocean Kayak Explorer Tour received more than they bargained for in the waters off Meelup Beach today. Predominantly blue skies, 30 metre visibility and impossibly azure water combined to create a scene one would be more likely to find in the Seychelles or Fiji than Western Australia. The group kayaked several kilometers east down Geographe Bay, before parking the kayaks in a secluded bay and walking to a spectactular lookout point.
“The tour was going very well”, said Cape to Cape Explorer Tour’s Gene Hardy. “Mike Wise, who has spent more time on these waters than most, lead the trip and had us climb about 50 feet up the Whale lookout off Castle Rock – it was really stunning!”
But it wasn’t until nearly back at the carpark that the real action started. Mike spotted two juvenile humpback whales cruising in the shallows at Meelup. Within minutes the whales had approached the kayaks and were headed straight for us!

Rukshen and Chok, before trying to swim down to the whale on the Ocean Kayak Explorer - Cape to Cape Explorer Tours - Oct 2nd 2010
With breaths held, we watched as the great, grey shadows slipped below one of the kayaks. Then there was a great splash and everyone had to laugh as Hemal and Chok, who had both leant over the same side, accidently fell straight into the water!! Before long the two had clambered back onboard and it was certainly all smiles when everyone was back on dry land.
“Fantastic”, wrote David Roberts of the experience. David was accompanied by his 16 year old son Oscar and neither of them could quite believe their very first encounter with a humback, or any other whale for that matter.
There are several more kayak tours planned for October and of course don’t miss the chance to also go on one of the famous Cape to Cape Explorer Walks – the guides botanical and geological interpretation of the area will inspire!
