Tackling the Cape to Cape walk with her son James, 11, was the perfect way to be mindful and present in nature, says Kids Nature Club owner Kristie Pupazzoni. Here, she tells of her experience hiking Margaret River’s awesome Cape to Cape Track.
.
In an amazing effort, the pair completed the 124km Cape to Cape walk in just six days. They chose Cape To Cape Explorer Tours’ self-guided hiking experience, allowing them the freedom to walk the Track on their own but with logistics, Track transfers and accommodation all taken care of.

Time spent outdoors on Cape to Cape walk
“James and I first spoke about doing a big hike together a couple of years ago. But life got in the way and we hadn’t spoken about it since then,” says Krisite. “When Covid-19 happened, we had the opportunity to spend more time outdoors. And we decided on a whim to walk the Cape to Cape.
.
“As the owner of Kids Nature Club in Perth the focus of all our programs is nature connection. I spend my days encouraging children to learn about, play in and care about their local natural areas. So of course I try to do this with my own children as well. I know that physical activity and time spent in wild green spaces are vital for mental health. For me personally it’s also the easiest way for me to be mindful and present. The beauty of the natural world instantly fills me with gratitude. And beauty is everywhere when you’re walking the Cape to Cape Track!
.
“James and I are not experienced hikers or campers but we are big-time nature enthusiasts who get side tracked by cool bugs and reptiles. So Cape To Cape Explorer Tours’ self-guided option was perfect for us. We had the flexibility to do our thing during the day. But we didn’t have to worry about where to sleep, what to eat and we only had to carry a very light day pack with us.

SurfPoint Resort the perfect base for Cape to Cape walk
“Before we started our hike we spoke to (Cape To Cape Explorer Tours founder) Gene Hardy and mapped out our plan to complete the Cape to Cape over six days,” says Kristie. “Using SurfPoint Resort as our home base was an excellent decision as all the amenities we needed were right there.
.
“We organised daily Track transfers with Cape To Cape Explorer Tours, which was invaluable. We met quite a few of the staff and they were all happy to provide lots of information about the local area. Plus they gave us tips for the hike and kept us updated about the various river crossings. Everyone was super friendly, helpful and flexible to suit out needs! One of the best tips we got was to download the “maps.me” app. It ended up saving us twice when we accidentally found ourselves off the Track.
.
Amazing adventure a “huge accomplishment”
“Walking the Cape to Cape Track with James was a huge accomplishment for us. This time spent together was invaluable,” Kristie continues. “Our highlights included the Wilyabrup Cliffs. Any part of the hike that meant we were scrambling across rocks. And of course the wildlife we saw along the way. It was an amazing adventure! And we are very grateful to Gene and the team at Cape to Cape Explorer Tours for helping us pull together such an incredible experience!”
