In early January 2011 Shaun and Kelly MacRae set off from Cape Naturaliste with the intent to get to Cape Leeuwin within eight days. Hailing from Canada and now living in Perth, the couple had visited the region a number of times before and were excited about attempting the long distance trek. With the assistance of Cape to Cape Explorer Tours, the duo planned a mix of on-track camping options and off-track bed and breakfast accommodation and also a rock climbing and abseiling adventure at the fabled Wilyabrup Sea Cliffs.
“The preliminary organization of the Cape to Cape Explorer Tours semi-supported walk was excellent”, says Kelly. “After the first couple of days however, it became apparent that walking more than 20kms per day was not going to be viable.”
“Cape to Cape were very accommodating and actually re-jigged our itinerary to make our experience that much more enjoyable.”
With high summer temperatures and several wildfires actually started in the Leeuwin Naturaliste National Park during the time, the staff at Cape to Cape Explorer Tours were kept busy accessing information from the Department of Environment and Conservation and the Bureau of Meteorology in order to keep the MacRaes up to date with the latest developments.
“Cape to Cape provided excellent information and support,” says Shaun. “The staff anticipated our trail ahead, sought alternative route and accommodation options and provided further information each day.”
On their final day Shaun and Kelly had made it comfortably to the Trigg Hill Lookout in Boranup Forest, some 25kms short of their original final destination, Cape Leeuwin.
“It’s not a disappointment at all,” said Shaun, as he helped Kelly pack the backpacks into his trusty Jeep Wrangler. “In fact, it gives us an excuse to come back soon!”
